Texas Tech University Press is pleased to announce the release of The Birthright of Sons by Jefferey Spivey. The book shares stories from the lives of marginalized individuals, particularly Black and LGBTQ+ men. Much like Spivey’s writing, which encompasses elements from various genres (horror, suspense, magical realism, etc.) the identities of characters within the text are equally diverse and influenced by interactions with surrounding people, places, and belief systems.
Across narratives, the protagonists confront self-identity crises. The Birthright of Sons highlights the unique and universal challenges of marginalized populations. Spivey utilizes literary tools such as storytelling and character development to spread and amplify underrepresented voices.
Jefferey Spivey is an award-winning author, poet, editor, and copywriter based in St. Louis. He was also named runner-up for Poets & Writers’ 2023 Egen Writers Exchange Award.
